Suspense presents “The ABC Murders,” originally broadcast May 18, 1943. Commonly cataloged as episode 42, this half-hour CBS adaptation of Agatha Christie’s 1936 novel stars Charles Laughton as the troubled traveling salesman Alexander Bonaparte Cust, with Elsa Lanchester also featured.

In England, a series of chilling, alphabetically patterned murders follows the railway route of the mild-mannered Cust—whose own initials, A.B.C., seem ominously connected to the crimes. Plagued by headaches and missing time, he fears he may be involved in horrors he cannot remember. The radio adaptation was written by Robert Tallman and William Spier and directed by Ted Bliss.
