In this episode of Stubbornly Young we’re going to focus on the surprises inside the phenomenon of pickleball. Of course, you know pickleball is EVERYWHERE, and my guess is that at least HALF of you (LIKE ME) play pickleball either casually – or like an addiction. Let’s learn more about what’s going on in this world of reportedly more than 14 MILLION players! I’m fascinated with the growth of the sport, wondering whether it's a FAD or here to stay – and curious about the uniquely cross-generational opportunities pickleball presents. Some of the answers to my questions were surprising!

  • Becoming What's Next

As I contemplate what I want to do when I am no longer a full-time executive, I'm wrestling. I'm thinking a lot about how I'll want to balance "purpose," recreation, hobbies, learning... and just sitting somewhere in the shade with a nice view having a mircrobrew - sometimes alone, mostly with family, friends and my dog.

This episode with the authors of Revealing your Next Season gives examples of how others with significant leadership roles transitioned to their next season - how they thought about it and what they did. I found it a deeply helpful conversation, and I think you will too.

  • Shortcuts to Demystifying and Using AI

For those with little and moderate (me) understanding of artificial intelligence, this episode is loaded with ways to understand the basics of AI and a brilliant suggestion for an easy and effective way get started using AI with any of the available tools out there (ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Copilot, Google’s Gemini, etc.). Since I recorded this episode and followed Chris Ferris’s suggestion, I’ve quickly become a pretty decent user of AI at my day job and in podcast preparation. The more I use AI, the more I want to. Using AI is expanding how I think about… thinking. It’s useful and fun. Listen to this episode to unlock a key secret to using AI!

  • The Best Mindset to Learn Something New
    2025/02/08

    Send us a text

Rule # 7 of Stubbornly Young is "Learn New Things." Why? Because learning new things gives us an overall sense of freshness and excitement - except maybe dancing - the jury's still out on that one for me.

Brian Reynolds is the co-founder of The Bridge Teachers. I know, BRIDGE? Isn't that the game for "old people," not for the Stubbornly Young? That perception (and sometimes the truth) created an irony that made me curious. What I learned from Brian, a decades-long teacher, about the BEST MINDSET for learning anything was a wild "AHA" for me! Definitely something you'll want to try.

  • How This Attorney Retired and Became a Successful Author
    2024/10/12

    Send us a text

I met Mark Shaiken when he was referred to me by a mutual friend who thought he might be a good fit for my podcast. Thank you Cristin Crampton Day! I was intrigued by Mark’s transition from a bankruptcy attorney to author. I wondered just how good of a writer he might be so I replied to Mark asking for a couple of his SIX books to sample. I read with amazement his samples of his two books of essays, “And Just Like That,” and “It’s What Makes Me Me – A Retired Attorney’s Relationship with Life and Times.” Both are moving, easy to read, funny and caused me to move into useful introspection. I then listened on Audible to one of his four legal thriller books, “Cram Down.” I enjoyed the unique story! I decided there was a ton I wanted to talk with Mark about including:

    • How did you shift your identity from that of an attorney to that of an author?
    • What did those around you think of this transition to a completely different focus at the time in life when most people are settling back?

    Such a great conversation!

In the past, I’ve explored Stubbornly Young topics with people who are like us - approaching or at middle age, and beyond. Since my objective with this podcast is to remain relevant to the YOUNGER people in my life, it seemed appropriate to bring one of those voices onto the podcast with me – I thought of Danielle Wallace.

I’ve gotten to know Danielle in the context of work. She’s a consultant to non-profits whose high-energy, no-nonsense advice caught my attention. I thought it would be fun - and I was right!... to hear her candid truths about social media, older people speaking with younger people, and more.

  • "Not Too Late" Author Shares Amazing Energy and Mindset
    2024/07/09

I’m so excited about this episode with Gwendolyn Bounds, author of a book that caught my attention called NOT TOO LATE – THE POWER OF PUSHING LIMITS AT ANY AGE. Wendy had a life changing transformation when she became passionately involved in obstacle course racing starting in her late 40s. Like many of US, Wendy had a successful career before she started this new chapter... as an award-winning journalist, an on-air host, and author of many books. Listening to Wendy’s book (which she reads), it feels like Wendy was REBORN with a passion that’s inspired the book, and all kinds of activities surrounding it. This book has been the catalyst for personal introspection, added workouts, and meaningful conversations with my wife. The Stubbornly Young will love this episode - and Wendy's book!

    Takeaways from the episode:

    • Embracing new challenges in midlife
    • Importance of embracing discomfort and being purposeful
    • Significance of movement as people age
    • Managing time and reclaiming time for meaningful pursuits
    • Pursuing passion and maintaining relationships
    • Overcoming fear of feeling embarrassed
    • Choosing activities that bring intrinsic excitement
    • Pursuing mastery at an older age
    • Embracing discomfort and pursuing passions at any age
    • Not waiting to pursue passions and embracing the process of learning

    Ponder and Share:

“If you wish to improve, you need to be content to look foolish, and that is true at any age.” –Gwendolyn Bounds

“Don't put up too many barriers to entry for yourself before you actually just get going.” –Gwendolyn Bounds

  • How to be an EXPERIENTIAL BILLIONAIRE
    2024/03/10

    Send us a text

"People regret most what they don't try, not what they tried and failed."
Joe Huff, co-author, The Experiential Billionaire

So, you aren't a financial millionaire. I learned to appreciate that that's less important than being an experiential billionaire!

Chris Schembra - the "Gratitude Guru," mentioned the book "The Experiential Billionaire" during Episode 11 of Stubbornly Young. I loved the title and asked if he'd introduce me to the authors. That's how I found myself having a fulfilling and thought provoking conversation with Bridget Hilton and Joe Huff, co-authors. I wondered why do so many people have "skydiving" on their experience bucket list and then not do it? Are some of us shaping our dreams of experiences based on what seems exciting more than what would be meaningful and compelling for us? This led to a condensed exploration (read the book!) of what will make us truly feel like an experiential billionaire, and how to get there.

    Top Takeaways:

    • Embracing a life filled with rich experiences
    • Cultivating a journey of meaningful endeavors
    • Crafting significant milestones
    • Overcoming obstacles in the quest for fulfillment
    • The concept of being an experiential billionaire
    • Valuing life's experiences above material possessions
    • Harmonizing life's adventures with everyday duties
    • The enriching effect of shared experiences
    • The synergy of personal satisfaction and contributing to the lives of others
    • The importance of lifelong learning and exploration

    Ponder and Share:

“It's about overcoming fear and taking action. So many of the things that you want in your life are only not happening because you're afraid. You're afraid to take action.” –Joe Huff

“The most fulfilling thing in the world is giving to others.” –Bridget Hilton

“We all have regrets, one thing or another. But the idea is that what we really regret isn't what we failed at, it's what we didn't try.” –Dave Tabor

“I definitely don't think there's like an age limit for just about anything because learning new things just expands your identity.” –Joe Huff
