In this episode of Off You Pop, we climb Snaefell, the highest point on the Isle of Man, starting with a hand in the Irish Sea at Laxey and rising through mining history, Norse naming, Victorian engineering, and the open moorland that crowns the island. This isn’t the story of my climb — that part comes later. This is the deeper world behind the route: the ancient ocean rocks beneath your feet, the Laxey Wheel and the miners who carved their lives into the mountain, the old Miners’ Road, the TT legends at the Bungalow, and the Victorian railway that still climbs into the clouds.
We explore the Manx language Gaelg, the island’s fairy folklore and the Mooinjer Veggey, the darker legends like the Moddey Dhoo, and the political identity of the Isle of Man as a self‑governing Crown Dependency with one of the oldest parliaments in the world. We meet the characters who shaped the island — from miners and railway engineers to TT riders.
And at the summit, we stand where the island says you can see six kingdoms: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Mann, and Heaven.
If you’ve climbed Snaefell, this episode will feel like returning to a place you know.
If you haven’t, consider this your doorway into the stories written into the mountain.
