The-Food-&-Wine-Radio-Network hosted a recent episode providing an update on the Livestock Traceability Regulations by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Jennifer English, the host, discussed the significance of a strong traceability program for the rapid identification and containment of animal diseases, ultimately contributing to the overall prosperity of the Canadian agricultural sector. Based on industry stakeholder feedback, the CFIA is updating traceability requirements for goats, sheep, and cervids. Producers will now have the option to use provincial premises ID numbers, there are new ID and event reporting requirements for goats and cervids, and transporters will be required to carry documentation during transport. Finally, there will be a shortened reporting time requirement for events such as slaughter, disposal, import, and export. The CFIA will continue its collaboration with livestock industries to strengthen Canada’s livestock traceability program.
