On September 5th, 1975, one of the wildest true crime stories in American celebrity history unfolded when Lynette Fromme, a devoted follower of cult leader Charles Manson, pointed a loaded Colt .45 pistol at President Gerald Ford as he walked through Capitol Park in Sacramento, California, greeting a crowd. Fromme, nicknamed Squeaky for her high pitched voice, had woken up that morning, dressed herself in a flowing red robe reminiscent of a nun's habit, strapped a pistol to her leg, and headed out with the express purpose of drawing attention to environmental causes and the plight of her imprisoned mentor Manson. As Ford extended his hand to shake hers along the rope line, Fromme instead pulled the gun and aimed it directly at him from just a couple of feet away.
