  • Remember the Sabbath: CH Spurgeon's Views on the Lord's Day
    2026/06/05

Are Christians still required to keep the Sabbath? And what does keeping the Sabbath really look like?

On this episode we will answer these important questions and many others as we consider the role of the sabbath in the Christian life through the lens of the convictions and teachings of Charles Spurgeon.

We’ll hear from Pastor Brandon Rhea, author of “Spurgeon's Forgotten Sabbatarianism: Examining the Role of the 4th Commandment in His Life and Theology.”

Rhea is the pastor at Faith Baptist Church in Kirksville, Missouri and received his Ph.D. from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, with his dissertation being focused on the Sabbath views of the Prince of Preachers.

    In this conversation we will:
    • Dispel some caricatures about the Sabbath
    • Discuss whether or not this command is still binding for us today
    • How to begin observing the Sabbath if you have never really set it apart as the Lord’s Day.

Along the way, we’ll learn how a commitment to the Sabbath shaped Spurgeon’s ministry, what this looked like in his own life over the years, and how this conviction runs like a thread throughout his preaching and teaching.

Note: This interview originally appeared as an episode of the Reasonable Theology podcast.

  • Sweet Comfort for Feeble Saints – A Spurgeon Sermon on Matthew 12:20
    2026/05/17

"Christ will not throw you away because you are of no value. You do not know of what use you may be, and you cannot tell how Jesus Christ values you after all." — CH Spurgeon

In “Sweet Comfort for Feeble Saints,” Charles Spurgeon reveals the compassionate nature of Jesus Christ towards those who are spiritually frail and struggling.

Using the metaphor of a bruised reed and smoking flax from Matthew 12:20, Spurgeon illustrates Christ’s gentleness and refusal to extinguish the faintest spark of faith. Christ values you, will not abandon you, and has a purpose for your restoration and growth in grace.

This sermon offers hope and reassurance to those feeling worthless or insignificant in their spiritual journey, reminding them of Christ’s tender care for all of His flock.

This sermon was preached on February 4, 1855 at the New Park Street Chapel. It can be found in Volume 1 of the New Park Street Pulpit.
