People don’t accidentally become more like Jesus, and we don’t drift toward holiness.

Many Christians sense that there must be more to the Christian life than what they’re experiencing. We long for real change, but often aren’t sure how transformation in Christ actually happens.

There is a way forward, but it isn’t found in quick fixes or spiritual life hacks. It’s found in the slow but effective process of intentionally building a life centered around the ways, teachings, and person of Jesus, becoming like Him not just for our own sake, but for the sake of others.

On Spiritually Formed, Brian and Katie Hess talk honestly about that journey and how discipleship to Jesus is shaping their lives, their marriage, and their family.

  • Love is Joyful, Not Happy
    2026/07/10

It's normal to want our kids to be happy...but what if the goal of "happiness" is robbing us and our kids of something better?

Happiness is good, but it's fragile and circumstantial.

Joy, on the other hand, is lasting, and is something that we can choose even when life gets hard.

Join Brian and Katie as they discuss the difference between happiness and joy, and why loving our kids well requires that we aim higher than to simply make them happy.

  • Love is Kind, Not Nice (part 2)
    2026/07/03

Sometimes the nice things we do for our kids are, in all seriousness, very unkind.

Love is kind, and kindness is motivated by what you can do for the good of someone else.

Niceness, on the other hand, does not typically regard what is good for someone else, and is more selfishly motivated.

Join Brian and Katie as they talk about what they believe to be simultaneously one of the nicest and most unkind things parents do for their kids in the society we live in today - give them their own smartphone.

  • Love is Kind, Not Nice
    2026/06/26

Jesus was many things, but nice wasn't necessarily one of them. He was, however, the embodiment of kindness.

The terms "kind" and "nice" are often used interchangeably, but they're often, in practice, opposite of one another.

Kindness is an expression of love that, by nature, regards the good and wellbeing of others. It is doing what is good for somebody else without an ulterior motive.

Niceness, on the other hand, is often extended toward others as a means of getting what we want. It's a counterfeit form of kindness that only exists as long as we get our way.

Join Brian and Katie as they discuss why being kind is far superior to being nice, and why it's so important that parents understand the difference.
