    Imagine becoming an astronaut, and after traveling back from space, making it your life’s work to study and solve the health problems posed by deep space travel. Dr. Jay Buckey is doing just that in the Space Medicine Innovations Laboratory at Dartmouth and a professor in both the medical school and engineering college at Dartmouth.

     

    In this episode we talk about deep space radiation, using virtual reality for improving mental health, custom atmospheres, and autonomous diagnosing tools.

  • A 21st Century Space Suit with Dr. Ana Diaz Artiles

    Dr. Ana Diaz Artiles is an engineering professor at Texas A&M University researching ways to further human space flight by designing a novel space suit. Her lab’s recent work to develop the SmartSuit concept combines soft-robotics, biometric monitoring, and advances in material sciences to bring Extravehicular Activity suits into the 21st century. 

    We talk artificial gravity, problem-solving as an engineer, and working with the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA in this exciting episode.

    Dr. Emmanuel Urquieta is a Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, working in both the Emergency Department and the Center for Space Medicine. In the Translational Research for Space Health (TRISH), he is working with NASA and commercial astronaut crews to acquire and study health data from space travel.   • The Next 500 Years with Dr. Christopher Mason

    Dr. Christopher Mason was a leader on the pioneering NASA Twin Study. He wears many hats as he works as a professor and researcher at Weill Cornell Medical School. Just after the Inspiration4 Launch in September 2021, he sat down with us to talk about his work mapping human genomes and how space changes us. Much of our conversation is framed around his book The Next 500 Years Where he maps the scientific breakthroughs needed and ethical questions posed to allow life to exist on many planets.
