The Southern Baptist Convention recently passed an amendment restricting women from serving in pastoral roles or preaching to assembled congregations. However, a closer look at Scripture reveals a very different picture. The word 'pastor' never appears as a title for any individual in the New Testament. It is a spiritual gift described in Ephesians 4, not a corporate office. Women like Phoebe served as deacons in the early church, and Paul assumed women would prophesy in gathered congregations. When the gifts of women are suppressed, the entire body of Christ is weakened and the mission of the gospel suffers.
