    2026/08/19

There’s a difference between being there for someone and carrying them, and sometimes that line gets especially blurry when family is involved.

In this episode of Soft Talk Hard Truths, Jay and Shay talk about the complicated side of helping the people we love. Jay opens up about navigating a changing relationship with a parent, the toll of spending years in survival mode, and the difficult question of what happens when someone else’s choices continually become your responsibility.

The conversation expands into the complicated relationship between parents and their adult children, why some people struggle to accept help while constantly giving it to others, and how being “the giver” can slowly leave you with nothing for yourself.

Because helping people is a good thing. Loving your family is a good thing. Being there when someone needs you is a good thing.

But when helping someone else consistently comes at the expense of your own peace, finances, future, or well-being, eventually you have to ask:

    When does helping start hurting?

Jay and Shay get into boundaries, responsibility, self-preservation, healing from family, and learning that sometimes being a good person doesn’t require sacrificing yourself in the process.

  • EP. 21: What Are We Actually Asking For?
    2026/08/05

We all have expectations—for our children, our partners, ourselves, and the people we choose to build relationships with. But how often do we stop and ask where those expectations came from?

In this episode of Soft Talk Hard Truths, Jay and Shay start with parenting and somehow find their way into age gaps, dating, Black men and women, gender roles, submission, independence, and the relationship debates that seem to take over the internet every few business days.

Are Black men and women really at war, or does social media just make it feel that way? When does submission become control? Have women changed, or do they simply have more freedom to choose what they will and won't accept? And are we entering relationships looking for partnership, or expecting someone else to play a role we already wrote for them?

It’s funny, layered, occasionally inappropriate, and ultimately comes down to a pretty simple question:

What are we actually asking for, from each other and from our relationships?

  • EP 20: What Are We Really Chasing?
    2026/07/29

What starts as a debate about who deserves to call themselves a DJ quickly turns into something much bigger.

In this episode, Jay and Shay explore how we define success, why people become attached to titles, and whether we're chasing fulfillment or simply chasing what the world tells us to want. Along the way, they discuss Rihanna's decision to step away from music, the public's obsession with celebrities, the realities of wealth, whether billionaires are really the problem, and why happiness should matter just as much as a paycheck.

The conversation also takes a heartfelt turn as they talk about education, school lunch debt, trade careers, and why every young person deserves the opportunity to choose a path that fits who they are, not just who others expect them to be.

Sometimes the best conversations don't follow an agenda—they follow the questions that matter most.

Join us as we ask one simple question:

    What are we really chasing?
