Episode 116 of the SK8LIKEYOU Podcast features a content creator in the skating world that is probably making frequent appearances in your social media feeds lately… Greggo (instagram.com/thatsgregg0)
This was actually Greggo’s very first official podcast appearance and from the second we started talking, I knew this conversation was going somewhere completely different than I expected.
What started as a discussion about skating and content creation quickly turned into one of the deepest conversations I’ve had yet about internet culture, trolling, cancel culture, comedy, social media psychology and what it really means to create content in today’s world. Greggo opens up about how his page evolved from simply posting skate clips into becoming a full blown content platform, how he connected with creators like Ant Banks and why so many people completely misunderstand the difference between trolling and actual malicious intent.
We also get into the role comedy plays in exposing uncomfortable truths and talk about everything from Howard Stern and Druski to Shane Gillis, Kevin Hart roasts and how internet outrage has completely changed the way people interact online. A lot of this conversation honestly felt bigger than skating itself because so much of what we discussed applies to culture as a whole right now.
Of course, we also dug deep into skating. Greggo talks about growing up skating Sundays at Roller Dome in Virginia with his mom, the moment his entire perspective changed after discovering real skate culture at Greenbriar, and how traveling to national events made him realize just how massive and connected the skating world really is. We also had a really honest conversation about regional styles, shuffle skating, East Coast skating influence and the deep history of roller skating in America including discussing a period in U.S. history where legally enforced segregation at roller rinks across the country was a very real thing. We talked about how those realities shaped rink culture, regional identities and skating communities in ways many people still do not fully realize today.
This episode honestly turned into one of the most thought provoking conversations I’ve had on the podcast in a long time and I think a lot of people are going to take something from it whether they agree with everything said or not.
