Foreknowledge does not spare the blow. Some losses come without warning — and cannot be fought.

In The Odyssey, Book 12, Odysseus keeps silent about Scylla, fearing that terror would paralyze his crew. Though Circe warned him not to arm himself, he breaks that command and stands watch with spear in hand, vainly hoping to confront the unseen threat. As the ship enters the narrow strait, Charybdis churns the sea to chaos — and in that moment of dread, Scylla strikes. From the deck she snatches six of Odysseus’ strongest men, lifting them screaming into the dark. They call his name as they are carried away and devoured, the most pitiful sight Odysseus has yet endured upon the sea.

This passage marks the cost of command made real: a choice foreseen, a loss unavoidable, and a grief that no skill or courage could prevent.
