About three dozen districts started classes on Monday and Tuesday; the remainder will open their doors today or next week. The first day of school in Eastport-South Manor, Quogue, Tuckahoe and Fishers Island was this past Tuesday September 1; in East Quogue, Mattituck-Cutchogue, and Westhampton Beach Wednesday September 2, and today kids in Remsenburg-Speonk, Riverhead, and Sagaponack begin their 2026 -27 school term.Lorena Mongelli, Maureen Mullarkey and Darwin Yanes report in NEWSDAY that students are resuming school amid an intensifying debate over technology use and screen time in the classroom. Yesterday, New York City…where classes start next Thursday…waded into the controversy by issuing a one-year moratorium on use of "student-facing" artificial intelligence for the elementary and middle school grades, and imposing screen time limits for students. Amid the growing concern over technology in schools, especially for young learners, Gov. Kathy Hochul has said she plans to study the issue.Earlier this year, the American Federation of Teachers, the second-largest teachers union in the nation, and the New York State United Teachers union called for bans on screens and "student-facing AI" for young learners. The U.S. Education Department, in contrast, issued guidance in August that advised educators to consider the instructional value of any technology implemented in the classroom."The public policy debate should not be framed as a choice between technology and no technology, nor should every screen be viewed as serving the same purpose," Kirsten Baesler, the federal department’s assistant secretary of office of elementary and secondary education, wrote in a letter last month. The NYS Education Department has said it is developing its guidance for technology in schools. On Wednesday, Hochul commended New York City's new policy, calling it a "bold move."***A Manhattan man staying with his family at a Shelter Island hotel was found dead yesterday under a nearby dock after failing to return from a swim.Spencer Korwin, 38, was last seen about 8 a.m. on Wednesday after he entered Shelter Island Sound near Crescent Beach from a dock at the hotel, the Shelter Island Police Department said in a news release. Korwin's wife contacted hotel staffers hours later, at which point first responders were activated for a search. The police did not identify the hotel.Nicholas Grasso reports in NEWSDAY that Marine units from fire departments in East Marion, Greenport and Southold aided in the water search, as did the Southold Town Police Department's marine and dive team. Southold and Shelter Island police drone units, along with the U.S. Coast Guard, also took part, the authorities said. Divers found Korwin underwater near the same dock he used to begin his swim. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation into the "apparent drowning" will continue as the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office determines Korwin’s "cause and manner of death," Shelter Island police said. The department does not suspect criminality and believes the incident was "accidental in nature."***The Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton presents a free concert this coming Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in The Basilica featuring acclaimed Spanish dancer/choreographer Paloma de Vega, international soprano Ashley Galvani Bell of Southampton, and pianist Bobby Peterson of East Hampton. Kathy Hochul and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani on the federal government’s crackdown on unlawful immigrants, which it has named “Operation Rotten Apple.”“Operation Rotten Apple was an operation we decided to take on because you have a very liberal-slash-socialist mayor here in New...
