    Psalm 23:4

    I. The Reality of the Valley


    i. Gen 15:12, “and behold, [p]terror and great darkness fell upon him.”

    b. God is with you in the darkness as much as he is with you in the light.

    i. Timothy 6:15-16. “...He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King

    of [k]kings and Lord of [l]lords, 16 who alone possesses immortality and

    dwells in unapproachable light...”

    ii. 1 Kings 8:12 (ESV) “The Lord[a] has said that he would dwell in thick

    darkness.”

    iii. Psalm 139:7, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from

    Your presence?”

    iv. Psalm 139:8, “If I ascend to heaven, You are there;”

    v. Psalm 139:8, “If I make my bed in [f]Sheol, behold, You are there.”

    I. He Retrieves Us When We Wander

    exist in the heart a principle, the tendency of which is to secret, perpetual, and alarming

    II. He Revives Us When We Falter.

    a. Faith can falter when we are disoriented by injustice

    b. Faith can falter when we are drained by conflict

    i. 1 Kings 19:10, “And I alone am left;”

    c. Faith can falter when we are disappointed by outcomes

    i. Galatians 6:9 Let us not lose heart in doing good

    d. Faith can falter when we are disheartened by suffering

    i. Heb 10:32, “after being enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings”

    e. Faith can falter when we are depleted by demands

    i. 2 Corinthians 2:16 “Who is adequate for these things?”

    f. How were they restored?

    i. Asaph was restored by getting busy

    1. Psalm 73:16-17

    ii. God restored Elijah after a time of rest

    1. 1 Kings 19:5

    iii. God restored the Galatians through a promise

    1. Galatians 6:7-8

    iv. God restored the Hebrews with a challenge

    1. Heb 12:2-3 “...who for the joy set before Him endured the cross,

    despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of

    God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against

    Himself, so that you will not grow weary [c]and lose heart.”

    I. The Good Shepherd Leads Us into Rest

    a. 3 Observations on Rest

    i. Rest does not come easily or naturally to sheep

    ii. Sheep rest when they can see their shepherd

    iii. The way to find rest is to keep the Shepherd in view


    II. The Good Shepherd Leads Us into Righteousness

    a. Phil 3:9 “...not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that

    which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the

    basis of faith,”

    b. 1 Peter 2:24 “He Himself [a]bore our sins in His body on the [b]cross, so that we

    might die to [c]sin and live to righteousness;...”

    c. 2 Observations on the Right Path

    i. The right path will not always be an easy path.

    1. Psalm 77:19-20

    ii. Where the shepherd leads is always the right path.

    III. The Good Shepherd Leads Us for His Name's Sake

    a. Ezekiel 36:22

    b. Isaiah 43:25 “...I am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own

    sake,....

    c. 1 Timothy 1:13 “...even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a persecutor and

    a violent aggressor...”

    Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience...”
