The indirect tax function processes more transaction-level data than any other function in the enterprise. Every purchase, every sale, every intercompany movement, every cross-border supply — each one passes through the indirect tax system, tagged with the jurisdiction, the counterparty, the supply type, the value, and the timing. The finance function sees the aggregated result. The tax function sees the underlying grain. And in most organisations, that grain is used for exactly one purpose: determining how much tax to remit and to whom.
This is a structural underutilisation of the most current, most granular, most counterparty-specific dataset the organisation produces. The indirect tax data set is not a compliance residual. It is a real-time map of the organisation's commercial activity — who it is buying from, at what volumes, in which jurisdictions, under what supply arrangements, and with what frequency. It records the commercial relationships the organisation depends on before the commercial team has formalised them. It captures the supply chain movements that the logistics team reports on monthly, in real time. It identifies the jurisdictions where commercial activity is growing or contracting weeks before the management accounts reflect it.
The brief this episode makes is diagnostic: every organisation that is not reading its indirect tax data as a strategic intelligence source is leaving signal on the table. The data exists. The infrastructure to make it readable is the same infrastructure that compliance now requires. The only thing missing is the decision to look at what the compliance system already knows.
