Jesus didn't just describe Himself as the Good Shepherd because it sounded poetic or it made for nice stained glass windows. He knows that wolves are out there, and they want to get His sheep. And friends, when we're part of a church's safety team or a group of law enforcement officers, we're called to lead with a shepherd's heart.
We have to deal with the wolves ourselves. When a real threat shows up, people need to know that someone is going to stay with them. The difference between a shepherd and a hired hand is about heart posture. It's about what we do when things get uncomfortable, messy, or downright scary. A shepherd doesn't run from danger. They run toward the need.
A shepherd understands that showing up matters most when it's inconvenient, when it's messy, when it would be so much easier to let someone else handle it. Shepherds feel the weight of responsibility in the best way possible. Not in an overwhelming, crushing sense, but with a deep, "These are my people, and I'll protect them," kind of commitment.
