Summary:
Harper Lee never could understand why young people liked To Kill a Mockingbird. “The novel is about a former generation,” she told The Plain Dealer, “and I don’t see how this younger generation can like it.” The year was 1964, just over three years since the novel had been published, and the book was already being taught in 8 percent of America’s public schools. By the late 1980s, that figure rose to 74 percent. In the five decades since Lee expressed her doubts about her novel’s appeal, the affordable mass-market paperback of To Kill a Mockingbird - the one most frequently assigned in schools - has sold 20 million copies. "Scout's Honor" is from the May 2016 issue of The New Republic.
