Steve also shares the moment that helped spark belief early in his journey and why that mindset continues to influence how he approaches life today.

  • #158 - Tom Rockliff (AFL) Finding Purpose Beyond the Game
    2026/03/04

In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down in person with former AFL Lions captain Tom Rockliff for a candid conversation about life after professional sport.

From playing more than 200 AFL games with Brisbane and Port Adelaide to now running his own business, Tom reflects on the transition from elite footballer to entrepreneur and father.

Tom opens up about the reality many athletes face when the game finishes. After years of structure, competition and purpose, retirement can leave a void. For Tom, that journey included a difficult divorce, time away from his kids and a period where he had to rebuild both personally and professionally. Running became a mental reset, journaling helped him process the day and working with a psychologist gave him strategies to regain clarity and direction.

He also shares why giving up alcohol became a turning point in his life. What started as a short break quickly revealed how much clearer, healthier and more present he felt without it.

Combined with routine, exercise and strong personal principles, Tom explains how these habits helped him become more grounded and focused on what matters most.

Now running Rockliff Finance and balancing work with fatherhood, Tom talks about the lessons sport gave him that translate into business.

Competitiveness, resilience and discipline remain central to how he approaches life today. While he admits he did not have the natural athletic gifts of many players, he believes his football IQ, determination and willingness to work harder than others were the traits that allowed him to carve out a long AFL career.

This episode is a powerful reflection on identity after sport, personal growth and learning how to rebuild purpose when life changes direction. Tom’s message is simple but meaningful: focus on the fundamentals, stay disciplined and aim to be the best version of yourself every single day.

  • #156: Todd Carney (Rugby League) Rollercoaster to Redemption
    2026/02/16

In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley sits down with Todd Carney for one of the most raw and reflective conversations on the podcast to date. A former NRL star now working as a pathways coach with the Gold Coast Titans, Todd speaks openly about the highs of professional rugby league and the very public lows that followed.

Todd describes rugby league as the greatest rollercoaster of his life. It gave him success, identity and opportunity, but also shame, heartache and lessons he had to learn the hard way.

He revisits the turning point that changed everything, the drive to rehab on the 24th of February, a moment he now calls his true Scoreboard moment.

From that day forward he committed to sobriety, rebuilding trust and redefining who he wanted to be as a father, husband and mentor.

The conversation goes deep into discipline and selfishness in high performance sport. Todd argues that young rugby league players must be selfish in the right way if they want to make it, prioritising the game over distractions, ego and temptation.

He reflects on alcohol, gambling and the environment that can swallow talented athletes, explaining how central alcohol was to his downward spiral and why removing it changed everything.

Now approaching 40, Todd talks about fatherhood, routine and daily habits that keep him grounded.

Early morning training, cold showers, structured sleep and one day at a time thinking are his anchors. He is honest about slip ups, about the ongoing work required to stay sober, and about accepting that his past will always be part of his story.

This episode is not just about rugby league. It is about accountability, identity and second chances.

Todd does not hide from the mistakes that defined headlines, but instead uses them as tools to guide the next generation.

His message is simple: if you are going to chase the dream, commit fully, own your decisions, and never ignore the moment you know something needs to change.

If you follow rugby league or care about the human side of elite sport, this is a powerful listen.
