She connected the families of all three missing women and enlisted investigative journalist Jerry Mitchell, whose reporting led pathologist Dr. Michael Baden to reexamine Mary's autopsy. His conclusion: she was dead before she hit the water — with a scarf stuffed in her mouth and a hematoma on her skull [citation:4]. In 2016, nearly 54 years later, a jury convicted Vail of murder. It remains the oldest conviction of a suspected serial killer in U.S. history [citation:2].
