This week, we’re talking about what happens when facts and accountability start taking a back seat to narratives.

First, the Lindsay Clancy murder trial — and the growing number of people seemingly more interested in explaining away the deaths of three children than holding the person accused of killing them accountable. We’ll also look at the comparisons being made to the Susan Smith case and an important detail that keeps getting lost in the discussion.

Then, outrage in New York City, after Mayor Zohran Mamdani expressed sympathy following the death of an accused murderer on Rikers Island — prompting an angry response from the victim’s family and raising a larger question: When did concern for the accused begin overshadowing concern for victims and public safety?

And finally, we head to the world of professional wrestling, where reports that ESPN was already looking to walk away from its WWE relationship spread quickly — only for the story to fall apart. It’s another example of the problem with wrestling “journalism,” where rumors can become headlines before anyone bothers to establish whether they’re actually true.

Three very different stories. One common problem:

Narratives travel fast. Facts usually have to catch up.

Question everything. Especially the narrative.
