The Music Stopped on Valentine’s Day, a full-length radio play, tells the story of Avi Noam Gross—my late husband—whose life ended due to a medical error. It weaves this painful narrative with his music, because I needed a way not only to tell what happened, but to honour Avi’s extraordinary musicianship.
Avi was a gifted composer and pianist. He completed his thesis on Bill Evans at the University of British Columbia, and his instrumental album Sophie’s Heart is currently streaming. This piece features his standalone songs as well as music from our original musicals, The Calling Hour and Meshugeneh, the Musical. The Old Show had already been written, and we were on the verge of workshopping it when Avi received the Tdap vaccine and suffered a catastrophic reaction.
I won’t go further into the details here—you know the story does not end well.
With The Music Stopped on Valentine’s Day, I hope you will come to know what happened to an extraordinarily talented, humble, and deeply intelligent man—one who was often misunderstood because of his unique nervous system, which placed him on the autism spectrum.
It will be three years this Valentine's Day that Avi passed. With any luck he's hanging out with Bill Evans.
Deep thanks for my friends who helped with the show in some way: Josea (tech), Aly (feedback), Walt (guitar at end), Shirley Perry (musical feedback), sound engineers MG ( as well as flute), KvH and Connor as well as Michelle for her encouragement, and the kind, Paul J. Gratitude to solo coach Jessica Lynn Johnston and Mira Wilder for initially instigating the show and helping me write it.
There are so many to thank who helped me through very tough years. This list begins with my LA neighbors and staff, (particularly José) at Horace Heidt Estates in Sherman Oaks, CA. My step son, Harv, Cha Cha, Suzanne, Conny - everyone who came to the hospital, the shiva, and/or the memorial that included my two phenomenal grandsons and their parents :) Also a shout to Torah Minyon in LA (particularly Mona), and now Har El in West Vancouver, B.C.
I am so grateful to Miriam, Micki and Kim, Florence, Lynnie, Seabury, Walt and Mitch; they keep me standing as well as on the east coast my old friends Nora and Holly and the the Sears - AS/ J; P.A.W., T/ M.
I can't forget Bea

Breathe in and out slowly and gently wherever you are.
We will survive this dark time of the world. It starts with you: standing, jumping, singing in the light of love and even if just a little at first, joy.
