Title: Banishment & Restoration (2 Samuel Chapter 14) - Lesson from April 6, 2025
Introduction: Last week's lesson allowed us to dig into scripture and evaluate a doctrine by using additional scripture. That is the primary practice and possibly the only reliable method in interpreting scripture and establishing doctrine. This Sunday we will continue to work through the book of 2 Samuel. The remainder of the book is a story of betrayal, and political maneuvering. Once again we acknowledge that scripture makes no attempt to cover up or even downplay the sins and shortcomings of God’s people. Scripture is the story of fallen mankind that can only be redeemed by a merciful savior. We should never forget that we are no different in this same regard. We are no better and no more deserving than those that we read of in scripture. Without Mercy and Grace we are doomed. Chapter 14 concerns itself with 4 principle characters: David, Joab, Absalom and “the woman of Tekoa. Each will play their own part in the narrative
Outline:
- The context of chapter 14 is found in the events of the previous chapter
- Joab senses the heart of David.
- The woman of Tekoa
- Tekoa’s plea
- David realizes that this is another Allegory for his own instruction
- David grants Joab’s request to deliver & restore Absalom
Conclusion: One would hope that this would be the end of David’s and Israel’s trouble. However, in the coming days, this same Absalom who was restored will become a thorn in the flesh of David and lead a rebellion which will bring turmoil to Israel.
