このコンテンツについて
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has been in the spotlight over the past few days with a flurry of high-profile moves. On Monday, he signed an executive order designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, as foreign terrorist organizations under Florida law, a move that has drawn sharp criticism and a promise of legal action from CAIR, which calls the designation unconstitutional and defamatory. The order bars state agencies from doing business with those groups or anyone providing them material support.
Over the weekend, DeSantis doubled down on his push to eliminate property taxes on homesteaded homes, appearing on Fox & Friends to lay out his plan. He argued that Florida’s projected nearly four billion dollar budget surplus can backfill revenue for rural counties if local governments cut what he calls waste, fraud, and abuse. He’s backing a slate of proposed constitutional amendments, including one that would create a full homestead exemption for non-school property taxes and another that would exempt seniors 65 and older from those taxes, both paired with provisions barring cuts to law enforcement funding.
DeSantis also recently announced a new proposal in The Villages for an Artificial Intelligence Bill of Rights, aimed at protecting consumers from algorithmic harm and utility rate hikes tied to massive data centers. That lines up with his broader push for state-level AI regulation, even as he pushes back against any federal executive order that would preempt states from acting.
In other recent activity, DeSantis held a news conference in Orlando focused on Florida’s drug interdiction efforts, highlighting major seizures of fentanyl, cocaine, meth, and firearms. He used the event to praise law enforcement and preview additional funding for the SAFE program in his upcoming budget.
