    2025/06/23

Welcome to another edition of the Songs That Were Covers series on Rock and Roll Flashback podcasts! I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will briefly review one song that had the unique distinction of, on two different occasions, reaching the #1 position on the US singles charts while being performed by two different non-American bands. That song is entitled "Venus"!

  • Doo Wop - The Classics & The Earls
    2025/06/22

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback! I'm Bill Price, and in this episode of the Doo Wop series, we will focus on two groups from the late 1950's and early 1960's, The Classics and The Earls. Interestingly both groups had a hit that had two words in the song’s title, and also used the same second word, “Then”.

  • Songs About Birds (MMM7)
    2025/06/18

Welcome to another edition of Rock and Roll Flashback! I'm Jumpin' John, and the story of my life revolves around the wonderful relationship that I had with my soul mate and the love of my life: Sally Lehman McDermott. Had I never met Sally, I would neither have enjoyed our fifty years together, nor the lives of our daughters or of our granddaughters. Music has the mysterious power to trigger deep emotions and re-awaken memories. The My Musical Memories series here on Rock and Roll Flashback Podcasts explores the various ways that music was an integral part of my life with Sally. I'm calling today's podcast, Songs About Birds. It is Part 7 of the My Musical Memories series here on Rock and Roll Flashback podcasts.

During my first 21 years of life I was vaguely aware of birds and bird calls, but I never really paid close attention. However, that all changed on October 16th, 1971 when I met Sally Lehman. You see, Sally loved birds - and, as her best friend and partner, I naturally caught her bird fever! From that wonderful October evening onward, I learned quite a lot about birds from Sally - and also later from our daughter Molly and son-in-law Matthew.

So, in honor of Sally, this podcast is simply about nine popular rock songs whose titles and/or lyrics just happen to mention birds. My choice of songs is not meant to be a "best of" songs about birds. Rather, I have simply chosen nine songs that Sally and I happened to enjoy. The nine songs appear in chronological order by the year that they were released. I will briefly describe each song and then play the song in its entirety. So here goes…

  • The Mamas & The Papas
    2025/06/12

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback! I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will review the career highlights of one of the most important pop groups of the 1960’s: the Mamas & the Papas!

The Mamas & the Papas folk-rock vocal-group was a defining force in the music scene of the counterculture of the 1960's. Their sound was built around vocal harmonies arranged by group leader John Phillips with a solid, electric folk foundation. A major part of their appeal lay in the easygoing southern California lifestyle the foursome seemingly embodied and endorsed. Their first two hit singles, "California Dreamin'" and "Monday, Monday", became cultural pop statements while also managing to appeal to more straight-laced music lovers. With only four albums issued during their three-year prime, the group's moment in the spotlight was brief. Nevertheless, their sound was influential and lasting enough that it became emblematic of the era. So how did The Mamas & The Papas come together?

  • Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale"
    2025/05/25

Welcome to the One Hit Wonders Series on Rock and Roll Flashback! In 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame introduced a new Singles category. Two of the six songs inducted that year were "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and "Rumble". I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will discuss Procol Harum's influential 1967 hit, "A Whiter Shade of Pale"! I reviewed the song "Rumble" in Rock and Roll Flashback podcast episode #134.

Besides the song "A Whiter Shade of Pale", Procol Harum would have a few more modest hits. However, nothing would compare to the lasting influence of "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Who was Procol Harum, and why the fuss about their hit song?

  • One Hit Wonder: Link Wray
    2025/05/22

Welcome to the One Hit Wonders Series on Rock and Roll Flashback! In 2018 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame introduced a new Singles category. Two of the six songs inducted that year were "Rumble" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale". I'm Jumpin' John, and in this episode I will discuss Link Wray's influential 1958 hit, "Rumble"! I will review "A Whiter Shade of Pale" in a separate podcast episode .

Fred Lincoln Wray, Jr. (whose last name was spelled W-R-A-Y) was born in 1929 in Dunn, North Carolina and grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia. Link Wray's mother was of Shawnee descent, and three songs he performed during his career were named for Indigenous peoples: "Shawnee", "Apache", and "Comanche". Wray served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War, where he lost a lung to tuberculosis. After his hospital discharge he joined his brother Vernon's country and western band, Lucky Wray and the Palomino Ranch Hands. Relocating the band to Washington, D.C., Vernon landed a deal with Starday Records in 1956. After recording a few country singles, in 1957 Vernon Wray was among the first to sign with Philadelphia's Cameo Records. The label's owners tried to market him as a teen idol, changing his name to Ray (spelled R-A-Y) Vernon. Performing as Ray Vernon, he recorded four singles for Cameo, however, it was his younger brother Link who would go on to musical fame. While backing his brother Vernon on those singles, Link on guitar, another brother Doug Wray on drums, and Shorty Horton on bass supported themselves doing local shows as The Ray Men (with Ray spelled R-A-Y). Here is the story behind the song "Rumble" - a song that would ignite Link Wray's career and set a rock benchmark.

  • One Hit Wonder: Edwin Starr
    2025/05/15

Welcome to Rock and Roll Flashback! I’m Jumpin’ John, and in this podcast episode I will transport you listeners back to the United States during the year 1970! Back then, the US was deeply involved in the Vietnam War. That war was a long, costly, and divisive conflict that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. More than 3 million people, including over 58,000 Americans, were killed in the Vietnam War. More than half of the dead were Vietnamese civilians.

Opposition to the war in the United States bitterly divided Americans, and a song that emerged that year would become both a significant hit and one of the most successful protest songs in pop music history. This is the story of Edwin Starr, and his version of the one hit wonder song entitled "War"!
