  • Exile in Babylon
    2026/09/07

When the world stops feeling like home, how do you keep the faith? In this message from River Lake Church, we dig into Jeremiah 29 — God's letter to His people in exile — and discover a surprising call: don't retreat, don't fight, but settle in and seek the peace of the place you've been planted.

We explore what it means to live as "exiles" today, following Jesus in a culture that isn't always our own, and why God's promise still holds — plans to give us a future and a hope. Even in Babylon, He's not finished.

  • Worship is Discipline
    2026/09/01

Worship isn't just what happens during the songs on Sunday—it starts way earlier than that. This episode wraps up the Why Church? series by looking at worship as something woven into our everyday work, the costly stuff we'd rather hold onto than surrender, and yes, the singing too—though maybe not in the way we usually think about it.

Along the way, the honest objections get addressed: not liking the songs, feeling awkward, feeling too exposed. The invitation is simple—stop focusing on yourself and look outward instead.

It closes with a challenge to name which area you need to surrender more fully, and offers a grounding answer to the whole series' question: why church? Because we were made for healing, growth, unity, and a part to play in something bigger than ourselves.

  • It's a Team Sport
    2026/08/25

Ever caught yourself treating church like something you watch instead of something you're part of?

This week we're talking about why faith was never meant to be a solo sport. It's easy to slide into a routine where church is just something you attend for what you get out of it — but that's not really what following Jesus looks like.

Following Jesus means actually knowing the playbook, not just carrying it around. And that playbook is packed with roughly 59 direct commands on how believers are supposed to treat one another — loving, encouraging, forgiving. That's not a set of nice ideas. That's the game plan.

We also dig into the difference between wearing the jersey and actually being on the team. Plenty of people call themselves Christians without ever really becoming disciples, and we talk through what that gap looks like in everyday life.

Then there's the free agent problem — church hopping, opting in when it's convenient, never fully committing to one team. Spoiler: that's not how being part of a body works.

If you've been sitting on the sidelines wondering when to actually get in the game, this episode is your invitation. Baptism, a small group, serving somewhere — there's a next step waiting for you.
