First Nations leaders dream of the next step in self-determination. They’re learning from the past and looking to the future as they make calls for action to empower the next generation.

    -

When Professor Marcia Langton walks into a room, everyone listens to her sharp analysis of progress, setbacks and her source of optimism.

“The youth are stepping up through leadership programs and they have very clear ideas, and I’m full of hope that they will go on with their careers and become great Australian leaders, great Indigenous leaders and create that better future that we all want.”

“So that makes me very hopeful. They’re very competent. They understand the importance of education. They’re charming young people, they’re polite, they’re respectful, and they’re deeply thoughtful. And I give them full credit for being the young leaders they are and the leaders of the future.”

Professor Marcia Langton says it’s time for First Nations peoples to have a representative body to fully engage with government on priorities set by Traditional Owners.

Thomas Mayo, who helped draft the Uluru Statement from the Heart, says the next chapter is about delivering justice to Indigenous peoples who continue to stand strong and whose voices must be heard.

Together they are optimistic and pragmatic about what’s required to make progress on the rights of Indigenous peoples.

Thanks also to other community members featured in this episode including Thomas Mayo, Gaja Kerry Charlton, Commissioner Katie Kiss, Professor Chelsea Watego, Bruce Simpson, Mena Waller, Alf Lacey and Manny Williams.

    -

When your last name is Mabo, you rightfully have a place etched into the history of human rights.

That’s the legacy proudly carried in the heart and head of Kaleb Mabo, the grandson of land rights pioneer Eddie Mabo.

“It’s enormous. It’s an enormous achievement when I reflect back on what he has done.”

“It’s something I take very seriously and I’m always looking at how I can further improve the Mabo name or his legacy itself, and how we can bring it more into the light of the everyday Australian.”

Kaleb has travelled to many communities and can see the consequences of his grandfather’s fight for Native Title.

In this Gathering Strength series, you’ll hear what other actions are having a real impact in communities.

  • GATHERING STRENGTH: S1E2 - Talking
    2025/07/06

Deep conversations about Indigenous human rights revealing what’s happening in First Nations communities all over the world.

    -

When Aunty Gracelyn Smallwood had dinner with activist and former South African President Nelson Mandela, he dropped a truth bomb.

“I did a PhD on First Nations Australians human rights violations. I’ve lectured all around the world. Nelson Mandela invited me over to talk on my PhD.

“And Nelson Mandela said at dinner, ‘in my country of South Africa, we’re having reconciliation with the truth. In my sister’s country of Australia, they’re trying to reconcile without the truth, and that will never happen.”

This Gathering Strength series is a deep dive into complex conversations about struggle and progress for mob.

Aunty Gracelyn says she became a human rights activist as a child because she was never shy about asking questions. Seven decades later, having shared the Indigenous struggle with Nelson Mandela and working relentlessly here in Australia, her passion has never wavered.

Jerome Wano is an emerging first nations leader who’s proudly waving the flag for Indigenous peoples on the world stage. He’s travelled to the United Nations in Switzerland and met with First Nations people in the US to exchange views on human rights issues.

When Jerome and Aunty Gracelyn talk, the world listens. It’s an empowering conversation about Human Rights for men, women and children. Stay tuned to the very end of this episode to hear Aunty Gracelyn sing her favourite Patsy Cline song, Crazy.

Thanks also to other community members featured in this episode including Thomas Mayo, Gaja Kerry Charlton, Bruce Simpson, Jerome Wano, Vonda Malone, Alf Lacey, Mundanara Bayles along with Commissioners Scott McDougall, Natalie Lewis and Katie Kiss.
