Almost everyone thinks they’re self-aware, and that’s exactly the problem. We share a quick morning brief that challenges the usual self-help take on self-awareness and replaces it with something more demanding and more useful: responsibility for our impact on other people.
We dig into research from organizational psychologist Tasha Yurich showing a huge gap between perceived self-awareness and measured self-awareness, then break down the difference between internal self-awareness and external self-awareness. Internal self-awareness is knowing your values, triggers, strengths, weaknesses, and patterns. External self-awareness is understanding how other people experience you. You can do years of introspection and still miss the most important data point: what it feels like to be on the other side of you, especially when you’re stressed, challenged, or frustrated.
We also talk about self-reflection versus rumination, and how looping on “why am I like this?” can become time spent with yourself rather than growth. If you’ve ever heard yourself say “I’m just really direct,” “That’s my trigger,” or “That’s just how I’m wired,” we offer a better next step. Instead of analyzing your wiring for another ten minutes, we use one practical question to turn insight into action: what does knowing this allow me to do differently?
If you want better leadership, clearer communication, and healthier relationships, hit play, then follow along, share it with someone who’d appreciate it, and leave a review so more people can find the show.
