Today, we’re diving into an intriguing shift in our society: the declining default status of marriage. Over the past few decades, marriage has transitioned from being a societal expectation to more of an option, reflecting far-reaching changes in economic conditions, personal priorities, and values.Let’s start with the numbers. In 1970, the marriage rate was quite high at 76.5 marriages per 1,000 people. Fast forward to 2022, and that number has plummeted to just 6.2 per 1,000. It’s quite a change, and it reveals a lot about how we view relationships today. Interestingly, after a drop in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a notable rebound in marriages in 2022, with over two million unions celebrated, outpacing even the numbers from 2019. It seems the pandemic has shifted our values, at least temporarily, reigniting the desire for companionship in some.
