This is the Queerty Interview, where we bring you conversations with the most exciting LGBTQ+ voices in entertainment, activism, and beyond. Cameron Scheetz, Entertainment Editor at Queerty, hosts today’s episode featuring Dan Levy and Taylor Ortega, the stars of the new Netflix series Big Mistakes.
Believe it or not, it was over a decade ago that Schitt’s Creek first premiered, the beloved series that made Dan Levy a household name and a four-time Emmy winner all on the same night.
Now, for his follow-up TV project, the actor and filmmaker has taken on a different kind of family comedy, one that is just as funny, but much, much darker.
In Big Mistakes, Dan stars as Nicky Dardano, a gay suburban priest who would have his congregation believe he is celibate, even though that is definitely not the case. Of course, that is just one little white lie compared to the mess he and his sister Morgan get into, which quickly snowballs from petty theft into an entire underworld of organized crime.
Upping the stakes further, their mom, played by the great Laurie Metcalf, is running for mayor, so, you know, no pressure.
And while Dan will be the first to tell you that crime is harder than it looks, he had some help from his fabulous co-star Taylor Ortega. She has previously been a scene stealer in projects like Ghost and Another Simple Favor, but this feels like the breakout role she has long deserved.
Taylor and Dan have incredible bickering sibling chemistry on the show, which you will also get a taste of in this conversation.
