Beneath the Greenland ice sheet, the United States Army built Camp Century, a real Cold War installation with covered trenches, laboratories, sleeping quarters, a chapel, and the PM-2A portable nuclear reactor. Publicly, it was promoted as an Arctic research station and engineering demonstration. Declassified U.S. Army records established the planning connection to Project Iceworm, a secret proposal to place hundreds of nuclear missiles in a vast moving tunnel network beneath Greenland, while Danish investigations and later historical research brought wider scrutiny and context. The missiles were never deployed, and the full network was never built. The ice itself defeated the design, deforming tunnels, lowering ceilings, shifting walls, and threatening any stable missile corridor. The story also reaches beyond engineering. Greenland was governed through Denmark, whose public peacetime nuclear policy conflicted with hidden military planning, while Greenlandic communities had little meaningful control over decisions made on their land. After Camp Century was abandoned, its reactor was removed, but fuel, sewage, chemical waste, infrastructure, and low-level radioactive material remained buried. In two thousand twenty-four, NASA radar detected the base again, about one hundred feet below the surface, renewing questions about secrecy, sovereignty, and environmental responsibility.
