In 2008, I decided to write a book. I wanted this book to be about a subject that was dear to my heart, pro football. And I wanted it to be about the 1970s. That was the decade that I grew up watching and falling in love with the sport. I had a specific outline in my mind for this book. I wanted to devote one individual chapter on each year of the decade of the 1970s. In effect, I wanted it to be an all-encompassing reference style of book.

Why? Because although previous books have been written about the NFL in the 1970s, no other book on that subject was comprehensive enough to explore every individual year of the 1970s. So, that’s the direction that I wanted my book to take.......

These days, the New England Patriots are often thought of as one of the elite teams in the NFL. However, that hasn’t always been the case, especially during the team’s infancy, when they were a charter member of the upstart AFL and chaos and confusion often reigned. The Patriots of the 60s and early 70s were a transient team and played its home games in no less than 5 different stadiums. The Pats also cycled thru its head coaches quite frequently back then and one coach in particular is often remembered as the one who best epitomized the team’s failings during this time.

In this 4-part series, we will take a look at the team’s humble beginnings in Boston in 1960 to their first years in Foxboro. We will also do a deep dive into the timeline between 1969 – 1972 to relive some of the most shocking and bizarre events to ever impact a professional sports franchise. The Patriots: From Boston to Foxboro.

HOST - JOE SANTOS:

Joe Santos grew up in Massachusetts and is an avid football fan, with a special fondness for the NFL in the early 70s. This Week in Pro Football and NFL Game of the Week were must-see TV back in the day. And living in Massachusetts meant you saw all of the NY Giants games on tv, both home and away, as they were the de facto home team for the NFC. Due to the blackout rules at the time, only the Patriots away games were shown. Being a huge sports history fan, Joe will continue to tell the unusual stories from an era that's considered to be the golden age of pro football.

In 1976 and 1977, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers experienced what is probably the worst two seasons to begin a modern franchise in pro football history. Most fans and historians of the NFL know that the Buccaneers had ended their inaugural season of 1976 with the embarrassing record of zero wins and 14 losses. But did you know that even though they earned a 2-12 mark in 1977, their 1977 season was actually worse in a statistical sense than their winless season of 1976. It’s true!

If you would be asked to name one particular decade where the pro football spectrum saw much more attention to new and better stadiums, the decade of the 1970s certainly must rank as the top, or at least near the top. When the 1970 NFL season dawned, there were 26 pro teams, playing in 27 stadiums. As any historian of the sport will tell you, the Green Bay Packers played their home games in two stadiums back in the 1970s…one in Green Bay, and one in Milwaukee.....

The 1978 NFL season incorporated a bunch of changes that resulted in important changes across the league. Several brand new rules opened up the pro passing game, which resulted in more yardage accumulation and more scoring by virtually every team. Those new rules changes were big in and of themselves.

Then came the advent of an extra playoff team in each conference, meaning that a total of five teams in the AFC and five teams in the NFC made the playoffs. Those extra two playoff teams led to the birth of the NFL’s very first Wildcard Weekend on the weekend after the regular season.......

The Oakland Raiders experienced a good degree of glory during the 1970s, as they participated in the NFL playoffs in seven of their first eight seasons in that decade. Their offense had a lot of quality depth at several positions, most notably at the tight end position.

By the end of the 1977 season, the Raiders’ roster had tight ends such as Dave Casper, Raymond Chester, Ted Kwalick, Bob Moore, and Warren Bankston in their lineup. Each of them enjoyed a good amount of pro success in Oakland.....

There was a semi-famous movie that came out in 1981 starring Kurt Russell and Lee Van Cleef titled Escape from New York. It was a futuristic film about the protagonist trying to get out of the big metropolis in less than 24 hours. In the NFL during the 1970s, there were plenty of protagonists who were trying to do the same thing, albeit in a slightly longer time than just 24 hours. But be it the New York Giants, the New York Jets, or the Buffalo Bills, there turned out to be quite a few pro football players who found a way out of the Empire State to what they felt were greener pastures.

There were quite a few Hall of Famers who left their New York teams and went to other NFL teams during the 1970s, with mixed results......
