  • REBOOT - Part 3: The Discipline of Silence
    2026/02/02

Reboot – Part 3: The Discipline of Silence

Description We live in the loudest and most chaotic moment in human history. With constant notifications, nonstop media, and endless distractions, silence has become rare—and uncomfortable. In this episode of the Reboot series, we explore the counter-cultural spiritual discipline of silence and why stillness is essential for hearing God’s voice, trusting Him deeply, and living with strength and peace in a noisy world.

    Key Scriptures

    • Psalm 46:1–10 – “Be still and know that I am God”
    • Exodus 14:14 – “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still”
    • 1 Kings 19:11–13 – God speaks in a gentle whisper
    • Mark 1:35 – Jesus withdraws to a solitary place
    • Isaiah 30:15 – “In quietness and trust is your strength”

    Big Idea

Silence is sacred space where God speaks, shapes us, and strengthens us.

    Episode Highlights

    • We are surrounded by constant noise and distraction, which may be drowning out the voice of God
    • “Be still” (Hebrew: Rafah) means to let go, cease striving, and relax
    • Striving often reveals a lack of trust; stillness is an act of surrender
    • God rarely shouts—He most often whispers, inviting us closer
    • Jesus regularly withdrew to solitude to stay connected to the Father
    • Solitude is not selfish; it prepares us to love and serve others well
    • Strength does not come from activity, but from quietness and trust in God
    • If we cannot handle silence, we will struggle to handle chaos

    Weekly Challenge

Create 30 minutes of silence this week (or start with 15 minutes):

    • No phone
    • No music
    • No podcasts or TV
    • No pressure to perform

Simply be with God. Listen. Let Him speak.

    Simple Practice

Slowly pray Psalm 46:10, removing one phrase at a time: “Be still and know that I am God.” “Be still and know that I am.” “Be still and know.” “Be still.”

    Closing Thought

Silence is not an escape from the world—it is preparation for it. When our souls are anchored in God’s presence, the storms of life lose their power.

Be still and know that He is God.

Episode Notes: Designing Your Environment for Spiritual Success

    Episode Overview

Pastor Matt explores how intentionally designing your environment can help sustain spiritual consistency and growth. Drawing from Psalm 1, he reveals that spiritual success is less about willpower and more about positioning yourself wisely near life-giving streams.

    Key Topics Covered

    The Power of Environment

    • Cornell University study (2010): Chocolate consumption dropped from 9 pieces to 4 to 1 simply by changing proximity
    • Your environment shapes behavior more than willpower alone
    • The principle: What you surround yourself with matters

Three Core Principles from Psalm 1

    1. Position Yourself Near Life-Giving Streams

    • Trees don't plant themselves—you must be intentional
    • What streams are flowing into your life daily?
    • Question: Are they life-giving or life-draining?

    2. Protect Yourself from Toxic Paths

    • The progression of spiritual compromise: Walking → Standing → Sitting
    • Nobody deconstructs overnight—it's always gradual
    • Guard your heart above all else (Proverbs 4:23)

    3. Design Your Environment to Make Sin Harder and Holiness Easier

    • Don't rely on willpower alone—use "situational support"
    • Create boundaries and guardrails intentionally
    • Remove toxic paths before they become temptations

    Notable Quotes

"Your environment shapes your behavior more than sheer flesh willpower can."

"What flows into you will determine what flows out of you."

"Design your environment to make sin harder and obedience easier."

"Above all else, guard your heart—everything you do flows from it."

    Practical Applications

    Evaluate Your Streams

    • Screen time: Average American spends 7 hours daily consuming content
    • Relationships: Are they drawing you toward or away from Christ?
    • Work environment: Is it draining or life-giving?
    • Habits: Do they promise life but deliver death?

    Take Action

    • Identify one toxic path to eliminate
    • Create physical boundaries (like avoiding certain areas)
    • Set up your environment for spiritual success
    • Make spiritual nourishment your default, not the exception

    Inspiring Stories

Susanna Wesley - Mother of 19 children in 17th century England who pulled her apron over her head for one hour daily to pray and read Scripture, teaching her children (including John and Charles Wesley) the importance of intentional spiritual positioning.

Pastor's Personal Victory - Down 30 pounds since December 1st by avoiding "temptation trail" in his kitchen, demonstrating the power of environmental design.

    Scripture References

    • Psalm 1:1-3
    • 1 Corinthians 15:33
    • John 15:4-5
    • Proverbs 4:23

    Challenge for Listeners

Continue the consistency challenge from last week: What one small, mundane step can you take to draw closer to Christ? Now add this: How can you design your environment to make that step easier to sustain?

  • "Reboot" by Pastor Matt Mitchell | 01.11.2026
    2026/01/12

New year, new start—but lasting change doesn’t come from big resolutions alone. In this message, Pastor Matt reminds us that God works through daily faithfulness, not occasional intensity. Drawing from Luke 16 and powerful illustrations, this sermon encourages us to “reboot” our lives by staying consistent in the small, often unnoticed choices and trusting in God’s unfailing faithfulness when we fall short.
