The Unexpected Morning

Good morning! Today, we're going to follow Daniel through a normal morning. But, as usual, something unexpected happens.

Daniel wakes up at 7 a.m. He looks at his phone and says:

“Oh no! I’m running late!”

Running late means estar atrasado.

Daniel gets out of bed quickly. He takes a shower, gets dressed, and goes to the kitchen.

He opens the refrigerator.

“There’s nothing to eat!”

He looks around and finds some bread.

“Well, I’ll have some toast.”

I’ll have some toast means vou comer uma torrada.

Daniel makes some coffee, grabs his backpack, and checks the time.

“Oh, come on! I’m really late!”

He puts on his shoes and leaves the house.

Outside, he looks for his car.

“Where are my car keys?”

He checks his pockets.

Nothing.

He goes back inside.

“I left them on the kitchen table.”

I left them... = Eu deixei...

Daniel grabs his keys and runs back outside.

Now he gets into the car.

He starts the engine...

Nothing happens.

“You’ve got to be kidding me!”

You’ve got to be kidding me! means something like “Só pode ser brincadeira!” or “Não acredito!”

Daniel tries again.

Nothing.

He looks at the clock.

“I don’t have time for this!”

He gets out of the car and calls his friend, Mike.

“Hey, Mike. Can you give me a ride?”

Can you give me a ride? = Você pode me dar uma carona?

Mike says:

“Sure. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”

Daniel waits outside.

Ten minutes later, Mike arrives.

Daniel gets into the car.

“Thanks, man. You saved me!”

You saved me! = Você me salvou!

Mike laughs and says:

“What happened?”

Daniel says:

“My car wouldn’t start.”

My car wouldn’t start = Meu carro não ligava.

Mike looks at him and says:

“Well, at least you’re not walking!”

Daniel laughs.

“That’s true!”

They drive to work together.

On the way, Daniel looks out the window and realizes something.

“You know what? Maybe I should slow down a little.”

Slow down = diminuir o ritmo / ir mais devagar.

Mike smiles.

“Exactly. Sometimes, you just need to take it easy.”

Take it easy = calma / relaxa / vá com calma.

Daniel takes a deep breath.

“Yeah. You’re right.”

And finally, they arrive at work.

Daniel gets out of the car, looks at Mike, and says:

“Thanks again. I owe you one.”

I owe you one = Eu te devo uma / Fico te devendo essa.

Mike smiles.

“No problem. See you later!”

Daniel walks into the building.

It’s only 8:30 in the morning...

And he already has a story to tell.
