On the morning of December 7, 1941, Japanese forces launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, devastating the U.S. Pacific Fleet and killing more than 2,400 Americans. Sailors, pilots, nurses, and civilians were suddenly thrust into chaos as bombs and torpedoes struck ships and airfields across Hawaii. Although the attack caused enormous destruction, it also revealed extraordinary acts of courage and resilience. The following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared that the attack was “a date which will live in infamy,” and the United States entered World War II. Pearl Harbor ended American isolationism and marked the beginning of the nation's rise as a leading global power.
