Parenting Doctors Podcast has evolved beyond parenting alone into a broader conversation about family life, relationships, and emotional well-being.

This podcast now explores the emotional and communication skills many of us were never taught — skills that shape parenting, relationships, marriage, conflict, healing, resilience, and personal growth. Through honest reflection and practical insight, the show focuses on helping individuals and families build stronger emotional connection, healthier communication, and more resilient relationships.

While parenting remains an important part of the conversation, the focus now includes the full emotional ecosystem of family life — how we connect, how we repair, and how we grow together through life’s challenges.

  • The Part of Repair We Never Talk About — Silence, Space, and Self-Regulation
    2026/08/30

Episode 15: The Part of Repair We Never Talk About — Silence, Space, and Self-Regulation

We often think of relationship repair as talking things through—apologizing, explaining, resolving conflict, and finding solutions. But what if a crucial part of repair happens after the conversation?

In Episode 15, Dr. Dan explores the often-overlooked role of silence, space, and self-regulation in healthy relationship repair. Drawing from his own experience with defensiveness and over-explaining, he examines how an activated attachment system can push us to keep talking, seek reassurance, and try to resolve uncertainty before the other person is ready.

Healthy space isn't the silent treatment. It isn't withdrawal or punishment. Sometimes, giving someone room to process—and regulating ourselves while they do—is one of the most emotionally mature forms of repair.

Because repair isn't just about finding the right words.

Sometimes, repair means knowing when to stop talking, tolerate the uncertainty, and let the other person breathe.

Maybe that's something we were never taught about relationships.

  • You Don't Need Someone Like You

Episode 14 — You Don't Need Someone Like You

We’re often taught to look for someone who is “compatible” with us—but what does compatibility actually mean in marriage?

In this episode of What We Were Never Taught, Dr. Dan van Ingen explores why personality similarity is not the foundation of a successful marriage. The Big Five personality traits—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism—can help us understand our differences, but they don't determine whether two people can build a great life together.

Shared faith, worldview, core values, family vision, finances, and lifestyle matter. But some differences can be negotiated, adapted to, or even transformed into a shared mission.

Ultimately, the deepest form of compatibility comes down to emotional skills.

Most of us—including many men—were never taught how to recognize and regulate emotions, communicate vulnerable needs, listen without becoming defensive, practice empathy, navigate conflict, apologize, repair after hurt, forgive, and remain emotionally connected through disagreement.

Marriage doesn't require two people who are alike. It requires two people who can navigate their differences without losing the relationship.

Because compatibility isn't simply something we find. Some of it is something we build.

You don't need someone like you. You need someone with whom you can build—and the emotional skills to keep building together.

  • The Things We Never Learned About Being Alone

Episode 13: The Things We Never Learned About Being Alone

Marriage is supposed to bring two people together—but what happens when we forget how to remain ourselves within the relationship?

In this episode of What We Were Never Taught, Dr. Dan explores one of the most overlooked challenges of marriage: learning how to be alone without becoming lonely, and learning how to stay connected without losing yourself.

We often assume that a healthy marriage means doing everything together, sharing everything, and becoming one. But healthy intimacy requires something more complicated: two individuals who can remain emotionally connected while maintaining their own identity, voice, interests, friendships, and sense of self.

Dr. Dan explores how personality differences—including introversion and extroversion, assertiveness, agreeableness, and independence—can shape the way spouses experience closeness, conflict, and solitude. He also examines what happens when one spouse's personality begins to dominate the relationship, or when an agreeable spouse gradually gives up their own voice to avoid conflict.

The episode goes deeper into validation, emotional fusion, and differentiation. What happens when your spouse's opinion becomes the primary source of your self-worth? When admiration turns into psychological dependence? When you value your spouse's judgment so much that you stop trusting your own?

Dr. Dan also addresses one of the most difficult patterns in marriage: the spouse who cannot admit being wrong, apologize, or tolerate disagreement. Personality may help explain why we behave the way we do—but it doesn't excuse refusing accountability.

Drawing from his years working with married couples, as well as lessons from his own life and mistakes, Dr. Dan explores what it means to build a marriage between two whole people—people who can disagree, repair, grow, admire one another, and still maintain a strong sense of who they are.

Because maybe the goal of marriage isn't to find someone who completes you.

Maybe it's to become two people who know who they are, know who the other person is, and choose to build a life together without losing themselves in the process.
