In her Royal Street mansion, enslaved people were chained, starved, mutilated, and reportedly subjected to crude “medical experiments” in a locked attic chamber exposed only after a kitchen fire on April 10, 1834. After the mob destroyed the house and LaLaurie fled, the mansion’s reputation fused with New Orleans.
