On October 16, 2025, the Prince Edward Island government formally requested that the RCMP and FINTRAC launch investigations into allegations of foreign interference and money laundering. The move follows a Parliament Hill press conference that accused P.E.I. of being used as a “forward operating base” for the Chinese Communist Party claims tied to two Buddhist-affiliated groups with major land holdings on the Island.

Premier Rob Lantz says the goal is to “separate fact from fiction” and restore public trust after years of unease over land acquisitions and an aborted 2016–2018 investigation. Both Buddhist organizations, GEBIS and GWBI, have welcomed the federal probes, hoping for clarity after what they describe as years of harmful speculation.

As the RCMP and FINTRAC review the allegations, the outcome could redefine how Canada handles concerns over influence, sovereignty, and community trust at home.
