    Pura Belpré was the first Puerto Rican librarian in the New York Public Library system.

    A gifted storyteller, Puppeteer, and author, she shared, re-interpreted, and wrote Puerto Rican folk tales, including publishing the first mainstream children's book for Spanish children in the continental United States in 1932.
