Ordinary I EnoughThere is a particular pressure that can arrive when something is nearly finished. The mind starts looking for meaning. The body starts scanning for proof. A part of us may want the final days to feel different from all the days before them, as if the ending needs to be dramatic in order for the effort to count.
This episode begins there, in the quiet pressure of the almost ending.
Ordinary Is Enough is a reflection of the final days of The Clearing, when it can be tempting to look for a strong finish, a clear transformation or one final piece of evidence that the month has mattered. But real change does not always arrive with ceremony. Sometimes it arrives through the simple repetition of what has already been working. One evening. One choice. One ordinary moment that no longer feels quite the way it did at the beginning.
This Sourel gently explores why endings can stir up more than we expect. A part of us may want triumph. Another part may want certainty. Another part may quietly fear that if nothing dramatic happens, then perhaps nothing real has changed. But the body often tells a subtler story. The evening may feel less loaded. The familiar pull may have less force. The hour that once felt like a battle may have become simply an hour again.
None of that needs to be impressive for it to matter.
This episode is an invitation to let the final days be ordinary, without turning them into a test or asking them to prove anything. It offers a way of noticing what is already steady, what is already different, and what has been quietly building beneath the surface through the small choices that rarely get witnessed by anyone else.
It closes with one gentle invitation. Find one ordinary moment in the evening and let it be enough. Not perfect. Not dramatic. Not something you need to explain. Simply enough, on its own terms.
Ordinary Is Enough is part of The Clearing, a special month-long companion created for anyone choosing to put alcohol down for all or part of July, whether through the official Dry July challenge, a personal commitment, simple curiosity or something in between. The Clearing is not affiliated with the official Dry July Trust, and does not raise funds on its behalf. If you would like to take part officially and support a genuinely good cause, you can do so directly through dryjuly.co.nz.
The Clearing walks alongside the inner experience of this month instead, with three short reflections a week, all the way through July.
You do not need a dramatic ending for this to have mattered. You only need to notice what is still here, what is already different, and what is quietly becoming possible, one evening at a time.
If you find yourself wanting something to return to between these reflections, in the actual moment, an urge, craving, or old ritual takes hold, there is also an app called Settle and Source. It offers a ninety-second guided practice for the space between noticing the pull and knowing what to do next. It is not a replacement for anything here, simply another door, in case it is the right one for you. https://settleandsource.com
