 In this episode of InFact, host Julia Demann talks to Prof. Dr. Fabian Leendertz about how zoonoses, or diseases that jump from animals to humans, develop, and why protecting the environment is central to this process. Leendertz explains how habitat loss, climate change, and globalization create new transmission routes for pathogens, and he discusses why humans, animals, and nature must be considered together. At the Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH), Leendertz and his team research how to identify infection risks early on, using data from African jungle regions and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Their work focuses on the One Health approach, which links health research, ecology, and prevention to better prepare for future pandemics.
