  • Occam's Lantern Episode 13 - Superstition
    2026/07/31

Knock on wood. Avoid black cats. Never walk beneath a ladder. But why?

Superstitions are some of humanity's oldest companions. Long before science could explain the world around us, our ancestors relied on patterns, rituals, and symbolic thinking to make sense of uncertainty. Even today, in an age of satellites and supercomputers, many of us still find ourselves crossing our fingers, tossing salt over a shoulder, or feeling just a little uneasy when the calendar reads Friday the 13th.

In this episode of Occam's Lantern, we explore where superstition comes from—not to mock it, nor to endorse it, but to understand it. Together we'll trace its roots through evolution, psychology, and history, examining why the human brain is so remarkably good at finding patterns... even when none exist.

Along the way we'll discuss probability, luck, cognitive biases, folklore, and the comforting illusion of control. Why do gamblers have rituals? Why do athletes refuse to change "lucky" socks? Why do entire cultures develop traditions around seemingly ordinary objects and events? And perhaps most importantly, why are these beliefs so persistent, even after we know better?

Rather than dismissing superstition as simple ignorance, we'll argue that it's something far more interesting: an unintended consequence of one of humanity's greatest evolutionary strengths—the ability to recognize patterns and prepare for the future.

Because perhaps the greatest trick superstition ever pulled wasn't convincing us that the universe was sending signs...

...but convincing us that we could decode them.

Join me as we separate coincidence from causation, folklore from fact, and discover why a little superstition may add flavor to life—even if it isn't secretly writing the rules behind the curtain.

  • Occam's Lantern Episode 12 - Satanism
    2026/07/24

"To dispel ignorance, and champion knowledge, we will delve into what it means to take the devil’s name."For centuries, the word Satanism has been used to describe everything from heresy and witchcraft to political dissent and moral panic. Yet the religion founded by Anton LaVey in 1966 bears only superficial resemblance to the myths that continue to surround it.In this episode, we trace the path from medieval accusations and Hellfire Clubs to the formation of the Church of Satan itself, separating folklore, fear, and sensationalism from documented history. Along the way, we'll explore the philosophy, ethics, and principles that define modern Satanism, address some of the most common misconceptions, and explain why not everyone attempting to claim the name is practicing the same thing.Whether you're a believer, a skeptic, or simply curious, this is an invitation to examine one of the world's most misunderstood religions through the light of history rather than the heat of hysteria.Music credit - Cellar of Rats and Nucleosys.Contact: liamlykos@zohomail.comCheck out our Patreon for more information and to support the show!http://www.patreon.com/cw/OccamsLantern

  • Occam's Lantern Episode 11 - Immersion
    2026/07/17

What do Viking reenactments, Renaissance festivals, MMORPGs, virtual reality, Disney parks, themed restaurants, AI companions, and personalized living spaces all have in common?

They allow us to step outside the ordinary.

In this episode we explore Total Environments—not merely as entertainment, but as powerful tools for emotional restoration, creativity, belonging, and self-expression. Rather than asking whether escapism is healthy, we ask a different question entirely:

What if immersion isn't running away from reality... but preparing ourselves to return to it, better than we left?
