In this episode of 8158 Off Duty, Rico welcomes back Robb Watts for a raw, wide-ranging conversation about what happens when the uniform comes off—but the effects of the job don’t.
Robb opens up about the physical toll his years as a first responder have taken on his body, including multiple surgeries, chronic health struggles, and his ongoing battle to obtain disability benefits. His story highlights a side of public service that often gets overlooked: the injuries, financial strain, loss of identity, and difficulty finding purpose after leaving a career built around helping others.
The conversation goes deeper into the mental and emotional impact of first responder life. Robb explains how hypervigilance doesn’t simply disappear when a shift—or even a career—ends. The things responders see can follow them home, affecting sleep, relationships, parenting, careers, and their ability to adjust to everyday life. He also makes a passionate case for first responders having better access to long-term resources and benefits, particularly when PTSD and other struggles may surface years after leaving the profession.
Rico and Robb also talk candidly about addiction, sobriety, situational awareness, complacency, faith, family, personal responsibility, current events, and the changing world around them. Nothing is particularly off limits in this Off Duty conversation—and that’s exactly the point.
But beneath all the different directions this conversation takes is one powerful message: you still matter after the job.
Robb shares how something as simple as kindness has become part of his own self-care, and why helping someone else can sometimes help heal pieces of ourselves. He also reminds listeners why conversations like these matter: one person's story might be exactly what someone else needs to hear to ask for help, choose not to drink today, reconnect with their family, or simply keep going.
🎙️ 8158 Off Duty is where the conversation goes beyond the badge, beyond the uniform, and beyond the prepared questions.
Some conversations aren't polished. They're real. And sometimes, real is exactly what somebody needs.
