In this episode of The Advocate You Didn’t Know You Could Be, Anne King moves from the first pause into the next stage of advocacy: understanding the process.
Once the initial panic begins to settle, the situation can start to feel less impossible. Anne explains that most claims, complaints, disputes or unexpected problems follow a simple pattern underneath the fear and confusion. You do not need to understand legal jargon or complicated systems. You need a clear way to break the situation down.
This episode introduces the core principle of advocacy: separate the emotion from the information. Fear, shame, anger, confusion and panic are all natural responses, but they are not evidence. They tell you how you feel, not what has happened or what needs to happen next.
Anne then explains the four pillars of advocacy: what happened, what you know, what you do not know yet, and what you need to ask. These pillars can be used in many situations, from parking charges and benefits decisions to school issues, workplace problems, housing disputes, medical concerns and complaints.
Using the experience that led her to write the book, Anne shows how the four pillars helped make sense of a parking charge issue that later became a county court judgment. Instead of guessing, panicking or arguing, the process became clearer: build the timeline, gather the evidence, identify the gaps and ask the right questions.
The message of this episode is simple: advocacy is not fighting. It is understanding what is in front of you, asking clear questions and taking back control one step at a time.
