When a Pharisee at dinner blurts out, "Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God," Jesus doesn't disagree. Instead, He tells a parable that makes us wonder who actually makes it to the table.
In this sermon on Luke 14:15-24, we walk through the Parable of the Great Banquet and ask: if the feast is so great, why would anyone turn it down? And what does it mean that God sent servants out to the back roads and ditches to fill every last seat?
This sounds like a story about God settling for second-best guests, but it's not. Going all the way back to Exodus 24 and Isaiah 25, Scripture reveals that God always planned a feast for all peoples — Jew and Gentile, insider and outcast.
So, the real question isn't whether there's room for you at the table. It's whether you'll answer when the summons comes. The fear of the Lord, as Proverbs puts it, is where that obedience begins.
