  • Doug Herdt Has Not "Lost the Lesson."

In this last episode of season six of the Nobody Knows Your Story podcast, Doug Herdt and I spent an hour and a half talking about his life. His story, to use a few cliches, is one of getting up off the mat, never giving up, and when losing; not losing the lesson.

As Doug shares his story, you'll better understand why one of his favorite quotes comes from the Dalai Lama. "When you lose, don't lose the lesson." Bottom line, learn from a loss and try not to repeat it.

My eyes did sweat a couple of times while Doug recalled his marriage to Tina and the trials they experienced. His recollections caused me to think of another quote that has helped me. Sometimes we need to accept that grief and resilience can live together.

Thanks everyone for your support these past six years and for sharing the podcast with others. Now, enjoy the life story of Doug Herdt!

Daniel Tolson is a dedicated and proficient strategist and business coach and former Australian wakeboarding champion. As Daniel shares his story he talks about the many challenges he has faced during his life both physical and mental.

My time visiting with Daniel was a fun experience. As he shared his story, I was able to better understand what drove him to continually strive to be the best.

I'm sharing a link to a video of Daniel wake surfing as an adult so that you the listener can get a glimpse of what Daniel has enjoyed since he was a teen. (When Daniel competed he did not compete as a wake surfer, but as a wakeboarder holding a rope that allowed him to do many highflying tricks.)

  • Continuing to "Walk the Walk", Aaron Hafdahl Has Quite the Story

Aaron Hafdahl works as a substance abuse therapist. He didn't learn about substance abuse from textbooks but from the school of hard knocks. I know this is just one of the reasons he's good at communicating the facts of addiction AND what the future holds if his clients / program participants don't make positive changes to their lives.

I met Aaron several years ago when he was assigned to counsel my son Crosby. I heard enough of his story then to know that others would benefit by having Aaron share it on NKYS.

  • The Dustin Camp Story, Shared by His Family
    2025/11/12

    Send us Fan Mail

As the title says, in this episode we'll learn about the life of Dustin (Dusty) Camp.

At the age of 31 Dusty clutched his stomach and collapsed. He was gone within an hour and we didn't know why for a couple of months.

His official cause of death was a spontaneous dissection of the right iliac artery. The iliac arteries branch off of the base of the aorta. This part of the aorta is called the abdominal aorta because it's in your belly. The iliac arteries are blood vessels that provide blood to the lower extremities, including the legs, reproductive organs and pelvic region. The pelvis is the lower part of your torso, just above where your legs connect at the hips.

Once again, Dusty was 31. An iliac artery aneurysm typically affects older adult males often between 65 and 75 years of age. I remember being told by someone in the medical examiners office that for this to happen to Dusty was not one in a million, but more like one in five million.

We'll never know exactly why this happened to Dusty but we believe an accident he suffered a couple of years earlier may have compromised his artery.

In this episode, members of Dusty's family recall "Dusty moments". I've also included a few songs from artists Dusty enjoyed.

  • "Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity," Retired FBI Special Agent Rod Osborne Shares His Story

Rod Osborne was an FBI agent for 26 years. He’s lived all over including several faraway places like Spain, the Philippines and China. Now, just this information alone would be enough to get a people person to want to hear Rod’s story but wait; there’s more.

Did you happen to see the Hulu docuseries, “Mormon No More”? Rod, his wife Nan, and four of their five children appear in the show which deals with Rod’s daughter Sally falling in love with another woman while both married to men. I may be a bit biased, but I thought it was great!

As I visited with Rod and he shared his story, time and time again we realized we had much in common. I should say that Rod and I are friends, teammates on a tournament softball team. As Rod shares his life story, I know each listener will come away impressed by his dedication to family, country and truth.

In high school Steve Gamlin had a crush on a girl named Tina, but he was too shy to ask her out. Twenty-one years later Steve received an email from Tina. She wondered what he was up to because as crazy as it may have seemed, Tina had an interest in Steve in back in high school as well.

One thing led to another, and they ended up together. As Steve shares his story, we end up talking quite a bit about Tina & Steve’s relationship and some of the things they have been able to do.
