  • The Real OODA Loop in Hockey: How CLA Coaches the Emergent Game | Dan Poliziani
    2026/08/07

    Send us Fan Mail

Hockey is an emergent game. The puck changes hands every couple of possessions and nothing holds still long enough to script, so the players who win are the ones who read what is coming. No Way Out host Brian "Ponch" Rivera calls that the real OODA loop, and it is the heart of this conversation with Dan Poliziani, a hockey coach of more than forty years, former Yale player, and son of an Original Six pro.

After losing an eye early in his pro career, Poliziani followed the doctors' account of how his brain would rewire itself into a lifelong study of how people learn, and what he found maps onto John Boyd's OODA loop. He describes coaching as designing environments rather than running drills, shaping the constraints so athletes self-organize. That is the constraints-led approach and ecological dynamics, and it drops right into Boyd's model, where orientation is the center and skill lives in implicit guidance and control, the part built through experience, not instruction.

They cover blocked versus random-variable practice, debriefing as orientation-building, why learning is non-linear with long plateaus of consolidation, balance bikes versus training wheels, late specialization and Epstein's Range, biobanding, mission command, and why a well-oriented mind is the real edge in sport and in an AI-shaped world. The uncomfortable through line: stop coaching athletes like machines to be programmed, and start coaching them like complex adaptive systems that self-organize and win.

John R. Boyd's Conceptual Spiral was originally titled No Way Out. In his own words:

“There is no way out unless we can eliminate the features just cited. Since we don’t know how to do this, we must continue the whirl of reorientation…”

A promotional message for Ember Health. Safe and effective IV ketamine care for individuals seeking relief from depression. Ember Health's evidence-based, partner-oriented, and patient-centered care model, boasting an 84% treatment success rate with 44% of patients reaching depression remission. It also mentions their extensive experience with over 40,000 infusions and treatment of more than 2,500 patients, including veterans, first responders, and individuals with anxiety and PTSD

  • A TOPGUN Goes to the Merge With TBI, PTS, and Ibogaine | Trey Warren
    2026/08/04

    Send us Fan Mail

Trey "Raggot" Warren graduated from TOPGUN and flew in the F-14 Tomcat and F/A-18 Super Hornet as a Naval Flight Officer. He was also, three separate times, suicidal.

In fighter terms he went to the merge with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress, and the fight to get his life back. On No Way Out, Trey tells Brian "Ponch" Rivera how buried post-traumatic stress surfaced after his father's death, how stacked VA prescriptions left him feeling like a zombie, and how he found the way out: ayahuasca, psilocybin, and ibogaine with 5-MeO-DMT at Ambio, guided by fellow Naval Flight Officer Mark "Slider" Keller, the same door Kegan "Smurf" Gill walked through.

A year and a half sober, Trey now teaches, meditates daily, and works as a peer support coach and legislative ambassador for VETS and Americans for Ibogaine. Ponch ties it to John Boyd's OODA loop, orientation, and the flow cycle of struggle, release, and recovery, and to the idea that the real work is the debrief. Trey's message: suicidality does not care what you did in the military, and there is a path through. Veterans Crisis Line, 24/7: dial 988 then press 1, or text 838255. Not medical advice. Ibogaine is Schedule I in the U.S. and is dangerous without cardiac screening and medical supervision.

  • Kegan "SMurf" Gill: Surviving the Navy's Fastest Ejection | OODA Loop
    2026/07/29

    Send us Fan Mail

Kegan "Smurf" Gill survived the fastest ejection in U.S. Naval aviation history, punching out of an F/A-18 Super Hornet at roughly 695 mph and 0.95 Mach, two seconds from hitting the Atlantic. In this No Way Out episode, Ponch Rivera and Mark "Moose" McGrath talk with the fighter pilot and author of Phoenix Revival about what came after the crash: traumatic brain injury, the VA system, prescription drug addiction, and the psychedelic assisted therapy and meditation that brought him back.

Listeners who discovered Kegan through the Shawn Ryan Show will find the deeper cut here. His story maps directly onto John Boyd's OODA loop: the reflexive ejection that reveals implicit guidance and control, the way institutional systems drive behavior and distort orientation, and the long work of reorientation after trauma. It is a conversation about fighter pilot resilience, veteran mental health, and decision making under uncertainty, built for business leaders, operators, and veterans alike.
