Join us on Trucking Weekly Wire as we explore the critical challenges and imminent regulatory shifts facing the American trucking industry, which moves nearly three-fourths of freight across the U.S..
The Cargo Crime Wave: We delve into the alarming surge in cargo theft, a crisis the American Trucking Associations (ATA) estimates is a $19 million-a-day hit to the industry. Online cargo theft, often driven by transnational organizations operating out of Eastern Europe and Russia, has skyrocketed 1,500% over the past four years since the pandemic. These fraudsters are infiltrating the supply chain, stealing broker identities, and utilizing fake warehouses to move stolen products, which are often shipped in containers to other countries, sometimes via the LA area. The top items targeted are food and beverages, and household goods.
We discuss the industry's urgent call for federal action, specifically the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA), which would establish a unified framework and a much-needed national cargo theft database. Currently, the lack of mandatory reporting means many thefts go unreported, and there is no dedicated law enforcement agency focused on these crimes.
