Sherlock Holmes Day celebrates the birthday of Arthur Conan Doyle, the writer who created the famous detective Sherlock Holmes. Doyle was inspired by his medical professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, whose powers of observation and deduction became the model for Holmes. Beginning with A Study in Scarlet in 1887, Doyle wrote dozens of stories featuring Holmes and his loyal friend Dr. Watson solving mysteries through logic and careful reasoning. Sherlock Holmes became one of the most recognizable fictional characters in history and influenced detective fiction, movies, and television for generations. Doyle’s stories continue to encourage readers to think critically, observe carefully, and seek truth through reason and evidence.
