  • The Hairy Beast of Negros Occidental
    2026/07/16
In the summer of 2008, a small village in Negros Occidental woke up to deep scratch marks, dead livestock, and terrified residents describing a hairy, ape-like creature emerging from the forest at night. The creature was never caught. The locals called it the Amomongo, and its legend stretches back generations.

In this episode of Mystical Archipelago, host Kaizen takes you to the Western Visayas to explore one of the Philippines' most compelling cryptid mysteries. From the 2008 sightings in Brgy. Sag-ang to the limestone depths of Lezo Cave, we trace the Amomongo through folklore, cryptozoology, and the untamed forests of Negros.

  • The Ghost That Feeds While You Sleep
    2026/07/14
What if the most dangerous predator in Philippine mythology does not need a body to hunt? The Berbalang, a terrifying aswang variant from the Sulu Archipelago, sends out an astral double to feed on sleeping victims while its physical form lies unconscious. First documented by American anthropologist Fay-Cooper Cole in 1907, this creature blurs the line between the physical and spiritual worlds in ways that still haunt the islands of Tawi-Tawi today.

  • Babaylan: The Lost Priestesses
    2026/07/13
Before the Spanish ever set foot in the Philippines, there were women who held the spiritual destiny of entire villages in their hands. They could heal the sick with herbs and whispered prayers. They could speak to the dead. They stood beside kings as equals. They were called babaylan, and for centuries, they were the most powerful figures in Filipino society.

Then the colonizers came and called them witches.

Today we trace the full story of the babaylan, from their golden age as spiritual leaders, through the brutal Spanish campaign to destroy them, to the quiet survival that kept their traditions alive for over 400 years.

  • The Mountain That Waits
    2026/07/11
High in the moss-covered forests of Laguna, just southeast of Manila, a mountain hides a woman who has waited centuries. She heals the sick, blesses the humble, and breaks the hearts of those who forget to respect the land. Her name is Maria Makiling, and she is one of the most beloved diwata in all of Philippine mythology.

In this episode of Mystical Archipelago, host Kaizen takes you to Mount Makiling, the dormant volcano whose silhouette looks like a reclining woman sleeping forever. We explore the legend of Maria, her centuries-long love for the mortal Gat Dula, and the heartbreak that drove her deep into the forest. We also examine what Maria Makiling means as a diwata, a pre-colonial guardian spirit tied to land, water, and reciprocity, and how her story echoes the ecological wisdom the Philippines has carried for thousands of years. Along the way, we hear about modern sightings on the UP Los Banos campus, the unexplained lights in the trees, and the forestry students who met a woman who vanished into thin air.

  • The Goat That Walks Backwards
    2026/07/08
What if something was creeping behind you in the dark, walking backwards, waiting for you to fall asleep? In this episode, we explore the Sigbin, one of the most chilling creatures in Philippine folklore. Known across the Visayas and Bicol regions, this small vampiric beast walks backwards with its head between its legs and steals your heart through your shadow.

We break down the terrifying legend of the Sigbin, from its Holy Week attacks to the sorcerers who keep them as blood-fed servants. We trace its roots in pre-colonial Filipino animism, explore how shadow beliefs merged with Catholic tradition, and look at real modern sightings that still spark fear in rural communities.

  • The Hex You Did Not Know You Cast
    2026/07/07
Do you accept compliments easily? In the Philippines, a simple compliment on a cute baby without saying the protective phrase "pwera usog" can cause real spiritual harm. Today we dive deep into kulam, usog, and barang — three Filipino hexing traditions built on one terrifying idea: that your thoughts, words, and intentions can physically harm another person.

We explore how focused intent becomes a spiritual weapon, why the mangkukulam could be your quiet neighbor, how usog targets the most vulnerable, what spirit insects from barang do inside your body, and why pre-colonial babaylan traditions still echo in modern Filipino life. This is not superstition — it is a philosophy of human connection with consequences.
