A warning issued at 3:10 PM on April 10, 2009 gave Rutherford County, Tennessee only minutes before reports arrived of a tornado on the ground near Interstate 24 and State Route 96, just west of Murfreesboro. This documentary reconstruction follows the storm as it intensified from EF1 damage early in its track to EF3 strength near Almaville Road, and ultimately to a confirmed EF4 rating with maximum winds of 170 miles per hour. Moving northeast at roughly forty miles per hour, the tornado tore through subdivisions and commercial areas and passed just north of the Murfreesboro city center, missing downtown by less than a mile, remaining on the ground for about twenty-five minutes. The episode covers the National Weather Service damage survey that confirmed the rating, the response by the Murfreesboro Fire Department and Rutherford County Sheriff's Office, and a community recovery in which the Red Cross opened shelters and local schools became donation centers.
